Traphene Hickman Library - Targetti

Traphene Hickman Library, Cedar Hill, TX

The Traphene Hickman Library is located in the heart of Cedar Hill’s Midtown District, and features over 40,000-square-foot of space – four times the size of the city’s former public library.  The LEED Silver Certified project was designed by PGAL with exterior Lighting Design crafted by Dallas-based Essential Light Design Studio. The public library features outdoor upper decks and ground-level patios, gathering spaces, an expansive entry with book/media drop-off, walking paths, an outdoor amphitheater, and park amenities, not to mention the celebration of the building itself with its curved roof of wood and steel.

In projects like the Traphene Hickman Library, the roof purlins are exposed to create an architectural feature and a visual outdoor canopy.

The Essential Light Design Studio team selected the versatile JUPITER MINI PROJECTOR to be mounted on each section, directing its light across the exposed purlin to beautifully accent the architectural details.

JUPITER MINI PROJECTOR
JUPITER MINI PROJECTORS with tight spot optics were centered adjacent to the outside of each purlin, to graze across these vertical surfaces, and terminate with a splash of light on the opposite curved beam, creating a dramatic, repetitive light-and-shadow effect, where the majority of the beamspread is captured by the opposite beam.

The JUPITER MINI PROJECTOR is the simplest and most compact version in the JUPITER family and features a fixed, lenticular-type optic system that delivers precise and defined beams. It is entirely made of a painted milled anodized aluminum body, complete with a painted steel adjustable yoke mount bracket that allows it to be adjusted with respect to both the vertical and horizontal plane.

The public library's upper decks and ground-level patios are gathering spaces, and these areas are often used for outdoor evening events. The design team placed BULLETTO projectors mounted at the intersections of the curved beam and the purlins, which are used to downlight the deck below. The small scale of the BULLETTO and wide range of optics allows the projector to effectively and evenly light large applications like this while the actual fixture remains visually inconspicuous.

BULLETTO
Designed as extensions of the library's indoor community spaces, the upper decks and ground-level patios come alive after dark for gatherings and special events. BULLETTO compact projectors were carefully integrated into the structure, mounted at the intersections of the curved beams and purlins to provide just the right amount of nighttime illumination.

Despite their small scale, BULLETTO's high-performance optics provide smooth, even downlighting across the large deck areas, creating a welcoming nighttime environment while preserving clean sightlines and the architectural expression of the space. The result is lighting that performs exceptionally well without calling attention to itself.
