Bell Tower Green, Salisbury, NC

Bell Tower Green is a beautiful 3-acre public park in Salisbury, North Carolina that surrounds a historic bell tower. As Salisbury’s most significant downtown green space, Bell Tower Green is a place where the community gathers to celebrate, connect, and engage. This 3-acre park hosts multiple leisure and entertaining areas to accommodate virtually any type of activity or event. From play spaces to entertainment sections to lush green expanses.  The project took more than two years to construct and over four years of planning and private fundraising to amass more than $13 million.

The centerpiece and namesake of the park is the looming bell tower that once formed part of First Presbyterian Church and the Salisbury Female Academy. Erected in 1892, the bell tower now commands a stately corner of the park overlooking creative play spaces, interactive fountains, gardens, a pavilion, and meandering paths. An intimate formal garden hosts small weddings and ceremonies, while the expansive green lawn serves as a venue for music festivals, a farmers’ market, outdoor yoga, and more.Bell Tower Green has the capacity to host 5000+ people throughout the public areas of the Circle Green, Bell Tower Lawn, Amphitheater, Promenade, Playground, Splash Pad, and Garden Trellis. The Lighting Design for the project was crafted by Hartranft Lighting Design lead by Principal, Paula Ziegenbein.

From Rendering to Reality...

The unique Garden Trellis area features multiple half circles that provide a visual wayfinding pathway to the interactive water feature along the path to the bell tower. At the base of each half circle Targetti’s JUPITER inground luminaire in 3000K in a Wide Flood distribution.

Lead designer, Paula Ziegenbein noted that after AGI modeling and renderings were completed, the wide flood distribution of the JUPITER fixture provided the even distribution that they desired for the project. The specific distribution in this application needed to overlap coverage at the top of the arch that will eventually be filled with plant growth.

The JUPITER has a lenticular type optic that makes it possible to obtain defined, precise beams. The beveled trim features no visible screws or hardware, while still retaining a drive over rating. It is easy to install and has a minimal installation depth. Equipped with an optional hex louver or an asymmetrical screen. Also available in a projector version.
JUPITER
We chose the JUPITER for the performance and variation of beam spreads that it offered. After AGI modeling and renders, we saw that this fixture could get a nice wash or graze of light on the arch structure.

The compact SATURN was used in certain areas of the playground around the boulders. The SATURN combines aesthetics and functionality perfectly. Its small size direct view opal glass provides soft marker light effect. The absence of visible screws and the “glass only” effect make it particularly suitable for both indoor and outdoor installations.
SATURN
The SATURN was chosen for a fun and playful accent to the playground. The glowy frosted surface gives a little playfulness to that space at night.

The JUPITER Mini was used closer to the boulders by the interactive cascading water feature at the end of the archway path.
The JUPITER Mini fixture is a 2" diameter version of the JUPITER line with the same feature sets including the lenticular type optic that makes it possible to obtain defined, precise beams. The beveled trim features no visible screws or hardware, while still retaining a drive over rating. It is easy to install and has a minimal installation depth. Equipped with an optional hex louver or an asymmetrical screen.

"We placed the JUPITER MINI in front of the water feature with a wide flood distribution to add some drama to the form of the rocks,"

With over 40,000 square feet of space, the Bell Green Tower community park has transformed from what was once a parking lot and a few buildings to an expansive park that has become the fabric of the community. Hartranft Lighting Design and their Charlotte, NC team members lead the lighting design of the entire project with landscape design directed by LandDesign.  The lighting design team noted that the landscape designers from LandDesign were very mindful of creating rooms within the space.  “Its a big space but they grouped “like” areas to create different experiences in each area,” commented Paula.
